This exhibition is part of a series of events organized by the Embassy of Indonesia in the Republic of Bulgaria on the occasion of 60th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between the two countries.
But it is also part of the project of the National Gallery - "Art from the Embassy". "Batik from Indonesia. Arts and Crafts from Bali” can be seen from the 20th of May to the 26th of June in Square 500.
The exhibition shows for the first time to the Bulgarian audience traditional batik from XIX - XX century. The exhibits in it are from the collection of the Indonesian Embassy in Sofia and the personal collection of H. Е. Moreover, she is an expert and collector of traditional Indonesian art.
The Indonesian batik is an ancient technique of painting on cotton or silk. With a special tool - tjanting, melted wax is applied to the tissue as to achieve the effect of several colours; the processing operation is repeated many times by immersion in different colours. Batik is among the most commonly arts in Indonesia and holds a special place in the history and culture of the country. Not surprisingly, in 2009 it was entered in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
Masterpieces of Indonesian batik can be seen on the exhibition - with bright colours and intricate artistic motives. Along with them samples of Bali arts are shown - wood and stone sculptures, musical instruments, puppets from the theater of shadows from the island of Java.
