On the 18th of August, the Embassy of the Algerian Republic in Sofia, the Association for Friendship between Bulgaria and Algeria and the Association of the Algerians in Bulgaria organized an evening
dedicated to the Veterans Day - August 20th, 1955 and the Sumamian conference - August 20th, 1956. The commemorative ceremony took place at the Central military club in Sofia. The opening speech was delivered by H.E. Ms. Latifa Benazza, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Algeria in the Republic of Bulgaria. In it she emphasized the importance of these events for the Algerian history and described them as "bright moments during the national liberation movement of Algeria and undoubtedly turning points in the struggle of our people for the restoration of the country’s national sovereignty, a struggle whose price were enormous sacrifices - a fact that deserves to be highlighted". Later she shared details about the rebellion of the Algerians from the 20th of August, 1955 and the Sumamian conference on the 20th of August, 1956, that set "the beginning of the political structure of the Front for national liberation and the Army for national liberation". Finally she thanked the Bulgarians who helped the Algerian people in their struggle for liberation. Some of them were present in the hall and shared memories of that time.
A commemorative ceremony was followed by a screening of the Algerian feature film "The Well" /2015/ directed by Lotfi Bouchouchi.
